Learn Ateru Goju-Ryu Karate Jutsu from its creator, Hanshi Cullen. He has trained national and international winners in Kata and Kumite and has had his full contact fighters compete in the UFC, in Japan and many other countries.

Goju Ryu was "created" by Chojun Miyagi in the Naha region of Okinawa. Originally referred to as Naha-Te or just Ti (Pronounced Tea), Miyagi came up with a unique name to call this, the first style ever named: Goju Ryu Karate Te Jutsu (which at the time meant China Hand Art, NOT Open Hand Way) This "close in" style is the most traditional way to go at The Academy and it requires a high level of dedication. When karate kids students grow out of their category they will move to the next level - Ateru Goju. Come learn this most ancient and exciting form of traditional karate jutsu. Strong techniques like the Okinawans, beautiful movements like the Japanese, and incorporating the softness and circular movements of the Chinese arts. This all inclusive style is most effective in the defense of your life.

Jiyu Kumite or Sparring was created by Miyagi's top student Gogen Yamaguchi.. up to that point, no one had ever fought for sport but instead to train for health and to defend their lives. Hanshi Cullen received his black belt from Gogen's oldest and most famous son Norimi Gosei Yamaguchi in 1983, over 34 years ago, making Hanshi Cullen fall but two instructors away from the creator of this wonderfully effective art. 

Adult students are encouraged to work at their own pace and comfort level. Confidence can only come through constant growth and improvement and if you overdo it and get injured – growth can’t happen.
